1 Information

The slackline consists of several practices: the jumpline, the longline and the highline (treeline or midline). Today there is no regulation on the practice of the highline either in authorization or prohibition at the level of the law, even if many slackline insurances cover the practice of the highline they are based on the laws most (climbing, acro work, zip line, ...) this is why this practice is very specific and is practiced only by people free of their decision and under their own responsibility. Highline due to high voltages, height and the environment is a risky sport that can cause serious injury or death. Like other mountain sports (climbing, mountaineering, ski touring, ice climbing ...) even if its sports seem affordable for many practitioners it must be realized that this sport requires experience, specific techniques and procedures to practice it as safely as possible.
All topics discussed here are for informational purposes only; we gather information including the committee highline rescue experience (firefighter trainer group in highline rescue) of the ISA (international slackline association) and the various players recognized in the practice of the highline. His files are only there to sort out all the information contained on the web and to give as an example the best practices of practicing professionals. Today in France the only complete information for EPI installations (Personal Protective Equipment) can be provided by a State Climbing Certificate or High Mountain Guides. You can contact the FFCAM or the FFME of your department to get in touch with them.

2 How is it practiced, where and how?

We will speak here that practices in the natural environment, there are three variations in the term highline:
 - the Treeline which is practiced between 2 trees without anchors other than the trunk,
 - the Midline which is a highline with a restricted height which does not generally exceed half the length of the line,
 - Highline which is located at a high height where generally the practitioner does not see the ground when looking from one anchorage to another.

Unlike the slackline / longline, the practice is not done alone, like all mountain or sea activities, for obvious reasons of safety and relief. We advise you to get closer to the associations closest to you to know if they are able to make you discover the discipline and then practice it with trained people.

The next point is to know the material and be familiar with all existing products to know what to use and what to ban, the classic slackline kits, ratchets, intermediate is not at all suitable for this activity. You also learn the materials to use, you can already recover a lot of information on the technical files.

Very solid bases of slackline / longline on hardware and techniques (chango start ...) are already necessary before approaching the highline. And important thing, learn to go back on a strap without touching the ground because in treeline and highline you will have no support.

3 The material

On treeline 

It must first be known that for the highline only steel or stainless steel material can be tolerated, because aluminum does not bear shocks and especially when you start, the highline is only shock and repeated falls.
There are basic 2 separate installations that we will connect via the leash rings for security:

The main line consists of a minimum longline kit: (2 slings 1 ton, 2 shackles 16mm galva or stainless steel 12 mm, 2 belt clamps type banana cr 60 kN and the strap) the tension will be done either directly with a system of pulley 60 kN or higher, or through the use of a linegrip that will not leave the pulleys in place.

The backup line consists of a semi-static rope type A or B, 2 links of 10 mm EPI, 2 slings 1 ton
The interest of this backup is to be able to realize a complete system EPI and to be able to be in conformity with the installations of classic zip line and the blow that the helpers are authorized to intervene on the line.

And 2 links of 10 mm EPI for the Backup G, a pair of leash ring, "a sheathed leash (dynamic rope + tubular strap) a clean harness for each participant", a quickdraw, an aluminum carabiner with a belt pulley , as well as all the necessary protections to avoid any friction or others.

The rope and the strap must be at least 10 m longer than the length of the real line to make the "backups G", these 2 elements must be only intended for the highline (do not use a waterline strap for example), because follow-up is necessary.

On highline (pad anchoring or sealing)

Plates with washers and bolts at the correct sizes (10 or 12 mm) may be necessary.

The material will be the same as for the treeline but with in addition 12 links deltas of 10 mm to do the equalization of the slings

According to the backup method, provide the equipment provided by Highline Rescue Experience (HRE)

4 The installation

Before carrying out the installation, proceed by step:
-Have asked permission from organizations or owners (town hall, club ...)
-Make a checklist of the necessary equipment

-Control the integrity of all elements, any element that no longer meets the standards must be scrapped
-Have identified the installation of the site and the evacuation technique in case of emergency (see HRE)
-Being accompanied by at least one experienced person with the necessary skills, be between 3 and 6 practitioners to both multiply the controls and not be too many not to overload the site

If there is the slightest doubt; there is no doubt ! cancel until you meet all of these criteria.

Height length

The beginner lengths are between 15 and 20 m, the longer the difficulty increases quickly and the less dangerous it is because a too short line increases the force of the shocks and the risk of coming too close to the anchorage.

For the height a simple rule applies:

Length / 3 + 3 meters = the minimum height. Example for a line of 15 m: 15/3 +3 = 8, the minimum height will be 8 m, if there is less, in case of break of the main line and thus a return on the line of back up, you you will find the floors.


The protections must have been correctly installed to avoid any friction especially on all angles, all the textiles under tension are particularly vulnerable.

Set up


Main line
Protection of trees then the sling of the right size installed in U, installation of the shackle with the banana, setting up the strap with 5 m minimum of strap coming out for the back up
Backup line
Protection then sling of the right size installed in U, installation of the link of 10 mm setting up the rope by making a knot of eight (see nine more resistant) leaving 5 put of rope in more for the Back-up G
Make a flat knot with the outgoing strap about 20 cm from the banana pass the back-up link G in the loop, go around the tree with the strap with the remaining strand of strap and make a flat knot again and the pass in the link, the backup should not be too tight or too soft
For the rope make a knot of eight around the tree and make a knot of eight and pass the two loops in the same link.

Close your links and shackles and check that everything is in place

On the other tree before putting up the whole system pass the strap and the rope into the pair of leash rings. The same method must be performed except for the main line where the voltage system is to be added and thus the back up g also takes over the security node of the voltage system.

Once the installation has been completed, all the practitioners must control the installation themselves (closed shackle link, strap in the correct direction, etc.). This allows you to multiply the controls andespecially being a risky sport and under his own responsibility to ensure his own safety.


A beginner line is practiced on a minimum of 6 points 12 mm on each side, 3 points for the main line (called force), 2 points for the backup and a point shifted more than 40 cm from the others for the backup G

5 Redundancy

On the installation, you will have to notice a permanent redundancy of all the systems so that they are at least doubled.

Before you start

Each participant of his own leash and his standard harness (the harnesses outside the communities are only individual) does not print the harness or the leash of the colleague because moreover we do not know the experience of the material.
The leash must be connected to the pair of leash rings and to the main bridges of the diagonal belt by a knot of eight with enough slack to make stopping knots on each side.

As during climbing, a third party checks his knot and his fastening system.

We do not start and never stop at the edge of the cliff or at a tree but at least 3 m and because in case of a fall we could touch.

Protect yourself even with gloves, long pants, long sleeves, shoes ... and we do not practice with any object or garment that could hang or cut ... (shoe with hook, earrings, rings, watches, jewels ....) because the strap must not suffer any aggression.

6 Respect for others and the site

Know that on all sites must respect the place, have permission but still leave the site as clean as you found (see more if other people do not have the same sense of respect)

Has no impact on flora and fauna (eg we will not cut branches or dislodge birds for our practice, we will find another place)
We often meet practitioners of other activities, we respect them and we do not cause any inconvenience in their practices, whatever they are.
The majority of the sites are in parks, so we do not smoke and do not barbecue.
Do not leave your line for several consecutive days and always have someone to monitor it, let it install for several consecutive days will make you lose the warranty and standard of your products, especially for textile PPE that can not stay exposed to the elements.
